Carry On Restrictions for Airlines

What classifies as carry on?  Unfortunately, there is no easy answer because there is no carry on standard.

The FAA has set a rule that you may have one carry on bag plus one personal item.  The personal item that you carry on could include a purse, a briefcase or computer case, a diaper bag, etc.  But as for the other carry on bag, each airline is free to set their own carry on rules.  The good news is that most airlines are fairly consistent in what they allow as carry on baggage.  Still, confirm carry on rules with your airline before you travel so you don't get any surprises.
